Abstract:
The Gamma Factory (GF) is a novel initiative based at CERN that aims at the development of schemes for generation of very intense, extremely energetic (up to several hundreds of MeV) radiation using resonant scattering of laser light at ultrarelativistic, heavy, and highly-stripped ions. To explore the unique capabilities of the GF and implement the source in fields ranging from basic science, through medicine to decomposition of radioactive wastes, one needs to elaborate techniques of efficient excitation of the ions, under the conditions very different from those conventionally encountered in atomic-physic labs. During the talk, I will first discuss the principles of the GF, and then I will concentrate on the description of interaction of light with ultrarelativistic, heavy, highly-stripped ions, which on one hand are required for generation of highly-energetic photons, but on the other are a perfect test bed for various theories (e.g., quantum electrodynamics).

Please, be advised that due to the pandemic sanitary rules, we can absorbe 1 unvaccinated person per 10m^2, which means 4 people. As most of us are vaccinated, this should not be a problem. There will be a list of participants, stating that they were (or were not) vaccinated / are immune / with a valid covid test, where we will ask you to sign in upon arrival. Also, people with ANY symptoms of cold (either of running nose, cough, temperature, ...), not necessarily covid, are not allowed to participate according to the rules. We hope you understand.
