Abstract:
This is an extended version of a talk given at the PTF meeting in Katowice this year.
Ultrarelativistic heavy ions of large charge Z are accompanied by a large flux of Weizs\"acker–Williams photons. This opens up the opportunity to study a variety of photo-induced nuclear processes, as well as photon-photon processes. After a brief introduction to ultraperipheral collisions, we will explain the Wigner distribution approach, which allows us to simultaneously account for the dependence on impact parameter and transverse momenta of photons. The production of dilepton pairs with very low P_T is shown to be well described, from peripheral to semicentral collisions, without the need for additional medium effects.
