Abstract:

A significant discrepancy, persisting at different collision energies, is observed between the total pp cross-section values reported by the ATLAS and TOTEM experiments at the LHC. I will consider the hypothesis that this tension is predominantly driven by the assumption about low-mass diffraction used in one of the measurement methods. I will demonstrate how to extract the low-mass diffraction cross-section from the available measurements and compare the results with other data-driven estimates, thus providing a test for this hypothesis.
