dr inż. Jakub Kremer (AGH): The curious case of the disappearing track: searching for long-lived charginos with ATLAS

→ Europe/Warsaw
Description

Abstract:

Supersymmetric scenarios with nearly mass-degenerate higgsinos or winos offer a natural dark matter candidate, but their compressed spectra make them notoriously hard to probe at the LHC. For the smallest mass splittings, the lightest chargino is long-lived and decays into an invisible neutralino and a very soft pion, so its track appears to vanish in the ATLAS detector. I will present the latest ATLAS disappearing track search, which targets shorter tracks than previous analyses and attempts to reconstruct the soft pions for the first time. This challenging task improves the rejection of backgrounds and extends the reach for higgsino and wino dark matter scenarios.
