Abstract:
Since 2017, the ATLAS experiment at the LHC has been equipped with an additional subsystem of detectors that can register intact forward protons scattered in diffractive or electromagnetic interactions. The AFP (ATLAS Forward Proton) detectors were designed for operations during standard, high-luminosity LHC data taking and thus allow measurements of rare processes. I will discuss the physics of two-photon processes, experimental challenges in building the AFP detectors, their performance during LHC Run 2, first physics results, and plans for the future.
